 About

Boku no Hero Academia (translated as My Hero Academia) is a manga series created by Kōhei Horikoshi and published in the magazine Weekly Shounen Jump. The story is set on a world where people with superpowers (known as “quirks”) are commonplace; following the life of Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without a quirk who wants to become a superhero.

Premise

Boku No Hero Academia takes place in a universe where each person is born with a superhuman power, or “quirk”, following the exploits of Izuku Midoriya, who finds himself having no useful quirk, until he meets the strongest hero All Might. As Midoriya discovers the secret behind All Might’s quirk, he is determined to train into gaining All Might’s power and to enroll to Yuuei, the academy where all heroes apply to.

History

The first version of the manga series was published as a one shot manga in the magazine Jump Plus in 2008. Although it already had the concept of a superhero world and a main character who wants to became a hero, the oneshot has many differences respect the serialized manga, the main ones being the main character working for a gadget company and the heroes not having powers but using special gears. Boku no Hero Academia’s serialization began in the 32nd issue of Weekly Shounen Jump on July 7th, 2014, as part of “a special project.”

2016 Anime Adaptation

On October 27th, 2015, a possible anime adaptation was hinted after Kōhei Horikoshi published a screencap of a Shonen Jump’s cover announcing the green-light of an anime adaptation (shown bellow), being consequently reported on some news sites after its deletion. The anime adaptation was announced on the 49th issue of Weekly Shounen Jump, setted for release on November 2nd, 2015.

Reception

The first volume was released on November 4th, 2014, selling over 71,000 copies in its first week. A series of vomics (video comics) was announced, the first one being released on January 11th, 2015 and the fourth being released on January 31st, adapting the first chapter of the series with voice acting.

Online Relevance

Starting from the apparition of English scanlations in November 2014, Boku no Hero Academia quickly garined a fan following in the English net. In December 2014, a dedicated subreddit was created, gaining over 4,000 subscribers in the following 10 months,being also a wiki and a MyAnimeList page created during that time. As October 28th, 2015, searching the keyword “僕のヒーローアカデミア” on the Japanese artist community Pixiv leads to over 4,000 results, while searching “boku no hero academia” on the artist community deviantART leads to over 520 results. The series has also gained a significant presence on websites like Tumblr[10] and 4chan’s /a/ board.


Video game

A video game based on the anime was announced in November 2015.The game is developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for the Nintendo 3DS handheld game console, which was released in Japan on May 19, 2016.

SOME FUN FACTS

1.  Horikoshi is a One Piece fan. He sent a drawing of Smoker to Oda, that was featured in Usopp Pirates' Gallery in volume 23. Oda noticed it in the volume 77 SBS and encouraged his fans to read BnHA!
2.  Snipe, the gun hero, appeared in a one-shot that Horikoshi had made before BnHA, called Boku no Hero.
3. The first chapter features people who could be Uraraka's ancestor and Todoroki's ancestors, with a man being able to lift a book without touching it, a person seemingly on fire and a woman seemingly creating ice around her arms.
4.  In chapter 5 All Might mentions a guy with a tail as quirk. It's a reference to Ojiro Mashirao.
5.  In chapter 23 you can see someone without a head. In fact it's a scanlator's mistake since the raw is like this. However there really is a person with a speech bubble instead of his head in class B, as we can see in chapter 26.
6. Uraraka and Mount Lady's roles were switched in the first idea Horikoshi had of his story.
7.  Kirishima has a scar above his right eye. It comes from the fact that his quirk manifested while he was waking up and rubbing his eyes.
8. The director of UA is really a mouse. Only, he manifested a quirk, which is why he behaves like a human.

10.  Deku and Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach have the same birthdays: July 15th. This is not a coincidence.
11.   Denki was the very first character design that Horikoshi was happy with. However; Horikoshi to this day admits they cannot draw his hair consistently (if you look at all his appearances, it's always slightly different!)
12.   Mei Hatsume was originally going to be a Male character
13. Boku no Hero Academia has the record most Manga Volume sales in it's first running year. The record was previously held by One Piece.
14.  All-For-One is partly inspired by Darth Vader from Star Wars, according to Horikoshi.
15. Midnight was originally going to be the homeroom teacher for Class 1-A and meant to have a highly comical relationship with the class (especially Mineta Minoru), rather than the serious relationship standing now with Aizawa as the homeroom teacher.
16.  Before Manga Publication, A short copy was released in 2008 but the storyline was different of what it is now, At that time DEKU was a salaryman called as JACK who tried to make his own weapons to combat the villains of the world.
17. Kohei Horikoshi the mangaka for the series, was inspired by true and relatable events which occurred during his lifetime and the one shot manga which he created previously was took into consideration for creating MY HERO ACADEMIA.
18.  In an interview with Kenji Nagasaki (Director) And Wakana Okumura (Producer) they told that they believed in the manga series and long running animated story line up, they saw the potential and a wide audience, which improvised them to make this series more epic!
19.  The Director was asked about the break between the seasons, and the long hiatus which take place between the series, he assured everyone, that break is just to make things much more better from the previous series.
20.  Bakugo, was meant to be very kind and gentle and a true-born genius in the series, who never insulted anyone. But the initial draft of the character looked boring therefore Bakugo was created someone in reverse, an unpleasant character as what we see now.
21.  Kohei Horikoshi (Mangaka) admits that the series has lots of similarities with American Comics from MARVEL/DC. Horikoshi admits that Spiderman is one of the characters which inspired him for the series.
22.  Kohei Horikoshi, doesn’t believes in Cliffhanger series as according to him, maybe next chapter is not able to create interest in the series and this led to cancellation of two of his manga’s.
23.  In the Poll for the best character in the series at chapter 52 and the poll got released at chapter 62. The result led to Deku taking the top spot, but then after 50 chapters Bakugo knocked down Deku in terms of popularity.
24.  More than 100 people were auditioned for the voice actor role for My Hero Academia Characters, For Students young and new voices were considered and for teachers, old veteran actors were taken for a more impactful role.
25.  The whole story is already been written by Kohei Horikoshi, But he does make changes to the main story line up. And meanwhile 400 chapters are about to get published in total. That means alot of My Hero Academia is on the way.

Favorite CHARACTER 

Izuku Midoriya

Though originally born without a Quirk, he manages to catch the attention of the legendary hero All Might and has since become his close pupil and a student at U.A., making him the ninth user of the One for All Quirk.
Appearance

Izuku's manga profile.




Izuku has green eyes and black curly hair with green highlights. During his Junior High School days, he wore a black gakuran uniform with yellow buttons. In U.A., he wears the standard male uniform: a light grey suit over a white dress shirt and dark green dress pants, along with a red necktie that he doesn't tie properly, making it shorter than it should be. Izuku usually wears oversized red shoes. Though initially very skinny, Izuku has gained an array of well-developed muscles after his training with All Might.

Izuku's first Hero costume is a dark green full-body unitard with a red belt, elbow pads, knee pads, gloves, and red boots. He also wears a mask with long ear-like protrusions that resemble All Might's haircut, and a mask with a smile on it.

During the USJ Arc, while his costume is being repaired, Izuku wears his gym clothes: a blue track suit with thick white lines over his upper body and legs, which form the letters "UA".

Izuku's second hero costume had when to a few changes, though it may have some of the original aspects it has now looks more sturdy and combat efficient in appearance.

After his fight with Shouto, the fingers on his right hand became a little deformed and he gains two scars on the sides of his hand. His right arm is further scared after his fight with Muscular, leaving various scars on his arm and bicep.


Personality

Izuku is a very timid, helpful and polite boy. Due to being bullied since childhood for being born without a Quirk, he is initially portrayed as insecure, being more reserved and not self-expressive, especially in front of Katsuki Bakugou. However, after being accepted into U.A. High and facing Katsuki during the Battle Trial Arc, he has gradually become more confident and brave.

Izuku Notes
Izuku is also very diligent and strong-willed. Since he greatly admires heroes and has always dreamed to be one since his childhood, he developed a habit of writing down notes about everything he knows about heroes and their Quirks, including even other U.A. students. Because of this practice, Izuku has developed a great analytical mind and is easily able to form complex plans in short amounts of time, often taking advantage of his allies' Quirks to put them in motion. This aspect also helps him in figuring out ways to counter Quirks used by his opponents. Izuku also has the tendency to overthink about anything that grabs his attention, which makes him start mumbling to himself a lot.

Izuku is a caring person, and will never hesitate to rescue someone in danger, even if he knows that he's not strong enough to do it. Often, he does this in a whim, taking a more careless approach than usual. Izuku has also shown to be selfless enough to try to help people with personal, emotional problems, even if it doesn't concern him.

Of all heroes, All Might is the one that has had the most impact in his life, with the hero having shaped most of the goals and beliefs that he follows since childhood. Many of Izuku's decisions and actions are inspired by his desire to become a hero similar to All Might, and thus he has a great devotion for him, to the point of emulating several of his traits.

Izuku appears to have a more brash and abrasive side to him that mostly shows up when he finds himself in combat. This side of him makes him act more like Katsuki, being rather loud and unwavering, and also with a strong drive towards victory. He has even gone as far as to taunt Katsuki when the two of them fought when he is in this mentality. He claims that this is because he sees Katsuki as the embodiment of what someone who strives for victory should be. He also has admitted that he doesn't like this side of him very much, and tends to keep it in check.
Quirk and Abilities

One For All (ワン・フォー・オール Wan Fō Ōru?): Inherited from Toshinori Yagi, Izuku's Quirk gives him access to stockpiled power, granting him superhuman strength and greatly enhanced agility and mobility by spreading his power through his body. Though he has yet to demonstrate superhuman speed, immense reflexes, and durability on the level of All Might, Izuku has shown to be able to properly control a small percentage of One For All's power, using it to enhance his strength, speed and agility. If Izuku doesn't spread One For All throughout his body evenly his body can be immensely damaged from the force of his movements. Izuku has also displayed a type of mental connection to the previous users of One For All.

Recently, Izuku's reflexes and speed seem to have improved with the use of One For All, being able to hold his ground against various incoming attacks during the Provisional License exam. Izuku control of One For All has improved as he can now use 8% of One For All's power while in Full Cowl.

Moves

•     Detroit Smash (デトロイトスマッシュ Detoroito Sumasshu?): The same as All Might's move, except Izuku does it in the form of an uppercut.

•         5% Detroit Smash (5 パーセント デトロイトスマッシュ 5 Pāsento Detoroito Sumasshu?): Izuku activates One for All Full Cowl, then jumps into the air, and delivers an enhanced downward punch to the opponent.He has also used this move in the form a straightforward punch.

•         100% Detroit Smash (100 パーセント デトロイトスマッシュ 100 Pāsento Detoroito Sumasshu?): Izuku activates One For All at 100% and delivers a straightforward punch to the opponent.[8]

•     Delaware Smash (デラウエアスマッュ Derauea Sumasshu?): Izuku flicks his finger to create a powerful shock wave.[9] Doing this fractures said finger, limiting the time he can use this move without gravely injuring himself up to 10 times.[10]

•         1,000,000% Delaware Detroit Smash (1000000 パーセント デトロイトデラウエアスマッュ 1000000 Pāsento Derauea Detoroito Sumasshu?): Izuku uses One For All 100% that is also boosted by his adrenaline and delivers a powerful smack with incredible force that blasts the opponent away. This 100% adrenaline-enhanced move is powerful enough to overpower Muscular's Muscle Augmentation and incapacitate him.

•     One For All Full Cowl (ワン・フォー・オール フルカウル Wan Fō Ōru Furukauru?): This technique allows Izuku to now activate 8% (previously 5%) of One For All throughout his body, letting the power course and flow through him instead of concentrating it in one location. According to Izuku, this technique gives him greater maneuverability.[11] Activating this technique gives him enhanced strength, speed, mobility and agility. It also prevents him from breaking his bones when attacking.

•         One For All Full Cowl: Shoot Style (ワンフォーオール フルカウル シュートスタイル Wan Fō Ōru Furukauru Shūtosutairu?): While using One For All Full Cowl, Izuku uses a fighting style that focuses more on kicking.

•     One For All 100%: A technique that allows Izuku to attack using the full power of One For All throughout his body.

Overall Abilities
Izuku has decent prowess and physical parameters above the ordinary student. However, he has improved his physical capabilities through training, enough to provide valuable assistance during the battle against Stain. During his second battle with Katsuki, Izuku was able to hold his own against Katsuki and was slightly able to fight back even though he was still outmatched in strength and speed; Izuku was also able to injure Katsuki, which shows a drastic improvement in Izuku's abilities as in his first battle with Katsuki he wasn't able to inflict any damage at all.

Keen Intellect: Izuku has proven to be exceptionally intelligent on many occasions. He has displayed keen skills of observation and analysis. It is usually his intelligence that has helped him more than his Quirk. Izuku is able to formulate strategies that takes advantage of the situation and uses his knowledge to creatively utilize the Quirks of other people to their full potential, such as working together with Tsuyu and Minoru to escape the villains at the flood zone in the USJ. Izuku also has extensive knowledge on Pro Heroes and their Quirks as well. Izuku's intelligence has allowed him to figure out One For All's mechanisms, allowing him to utilize the Quirk more efficiently in a short space of time. Gran Torino even compliments Izuku's intelligence, saying that Izuku is the type of person who thinks before he acts.

High Pain Tolerance: Izuku is shown many in many occasions that he is able to handle and bear with a lot of pain, such times are mostly because of the repercussion of over using his Quirk; however, he can still manage to move his body despite feeling excruciating pain.




Equipment

Costume Gamma (コスチュームγ Kosuchūmu Ganma?): This is an upgrade to Izuku's second costume that Mei Hatsume created following Izuku's decision to change his fighting style, thus creating Shoot Style. The new additions consist of arm braces to support Izuku's arms in order to prevent further damage, and iron armor soles to enhance his kicking power.

Katsuki Bakugo

 (爆豪勝己 Bakugō Katsuki?) is a student of U.A.'s Class 1-A and the deuteragonist of My Hero Academia.

Katsuki is a young man of average height, with ash blond, spiky hair and red eyes. At school, he wears the standard U.A. uniform, save for the customary red tie. Underneath his blazer, he wears a white button up shirt, but keeps the first couple buttons unbuttoned. Despite wearing a belt along with the uniform's green pants, he does not pull them up all the way, giving his pants a baggy appearance.

His hero costume is composed of a fitted black sleeveless V-neck tank top with an orange X with the top half borders his shirt collar. His costume also has a seemingly metallic neck brace fashioned and used as a collar with three holes in both sides. His sleeves reach from within his large grenade-like gauntlets to his biceps. His belt, which also carries grenades, holds up his baggy pants with knee guards. He occasionally wears his hero mask that has large, flare-shaped cloth.

Personality

Katsuki is a very crude, violent, arrogant, and aggressive person that has a tendency of bullying Izuku Midoriya, who he often viewed as an obstacle to be surpassed, but now treats more as a rival.

Brutal and bloodthirsty, he smiles eerily when he's put into battle. While battling, his personality reflects his fighting style. His brutish way of fighting is shown through the Battle Trial Arc: mercilessly assaulting Izuku and having no regard for nearby objects, merely destroying them with his power. Despite this, he's quite talented in fighting, able to use his Quirk to not only destroy but to maneuver around the battlefield. He's also very intelligent, being capable of strategic planning and holding some of the highest grades in his class, to the point that some even consider him a genius.


While not the most mentally stable hero-in-training, nor having the image of one, he knows who his enemies and allies are. Cold to his allies, though not to the extent of friendly fire, but colder and brutal to his enemies. He's also very rude and foul-mouthed, which makes him unpopular with most of his U.A. classmates. As the series progresses, his outbursts become less aggressive, usually becoming more comical, as he mostly gets angry at even small things like teasing.[1] With that in mind, Katsuki seems to mature slowly but is still quite aloof and unsociable, showing disinterest in hanging out with his fellow classmates.

Due to the constant praise of his abilities and his powerful Quirk, Katsuki has a superiority complex and wants to be first and the best at everything. He doesn't like when people look down on him, as if they were superior; thus, it diminishes his already short fuse. Despite his extreme arrogance, he also thinks of people such as Izuku Midoriya as an obstacle on his path to becoming the greatest hero. Because of his complex, he's implied to be anti-social; He seems not to care for much people as he doesn't remember his classmates' Quirks or names despite being in U.A. for some time. He does, however, remember the names of people who give him a challenge or whose ability he respects, such as Ochaco Uraraka and went as far as to defend her when his classmates referred to her as a fragile girl.


Katsuki is also immensely prideful, as he hates the idea of others either helping him or him having to rely on others to assist him in battle. Because of his pride, Katsuki refuses to work together with others claiming he can do whatever he's assigned on his own. His pride has cost him on numerous occasions: he lost the Battle Trial due to his lack of cooperation with Tenya, he was effortlessly defeated by All Might in the End of Term Exam and only passed once he finally accepted to work together with Izuku. However, he will repay those who help him, such as when he gave Eijiro the money for his broken night vision goggles when he came to help rescue him.

Ironically, his inspiration for becoming a hero was the same as Izuku's, the Symbol of Peace, All Might. However, their beliefs differ: Katsuki feels a hero should never stop fighting or give up, regardless of the threat they face, and that always winning is the mark of a true hero. Furthermore, because of his arrogant and conceited behavior, various heroes, civilians and even villains have commented on his villain-like behavior. However, Katsuki is unwavering in becoming a hero, having outright refused Tomura's acceptance into the League of Villains,
Quirk and Abilities

Explosion (爆破 Bakuha?): Katsuki's sweat on his palms are nitroglycerin-like, and he can use it to create explosions. The more Katsuki sweats, the stronger his explosions become. So far, the signature use of his Quirk is through his hands; usually between punches or to shroud his fist with explosive energy. Katsuki's most powerful Explosion so far (without the need of the Grenadier Bracers) was able to completely destroy Ochako's meteor rubble shower, knocking her down onto the ground at the same time and causing a shockwave that was felt throughout the stadium. Due to his extensive combat knowledge and creativity, Katsuki's Explosion Quirk has shown to be deadly and versatile.

Katsuki does not suffer from the impact of his explosions, thus giving him an immunity to his own explosions. He is able to set off constant explosions around him without feeling any negative repercussions. It is currently unknown if he can be affected by explosions from any source other than from his own Quirk; Although, during the Sports Festival's first obstacle, Katsuki was able to navigate through the landmines without being harmed.

One drawback of Katsuki's Quirk is that he is unable to use his explosions in areas filled with flammable gas as his explosions would ignite the gas and spread it further. Additionally, because his Quirk relies on his hands sweating, it is more difficult for his Quirk to work in colder climates . Without sweat from his palms, he cannot use his Quirk to it's fullest potential.

Moves

•     Blast Rush Turbo (爆速ターボ Bakusoku Tābo?): Katsuki throws his hands backwards and then causes an explosion in his palms, to propel himself forward. This move can also be used to achieve a pseudo form of flight, as Katsuki used this move to fly over the giant robots during the Obstacle Race during the Sports Festival.

•     Stun Grenade (閃光弾 Sutan Gurenēdo?): Katsuki creates a sphere of light with his hands. The sphere of light implodes, causing an explosion around Katsuki, blinding anything in Katsuki's vicinity.[2]

•     Howitzer Impact (榴弾砲着弾 Hauzā Inpakuto?): Katsuki dashes into the air and creates two Explosions in his hands. While in the air, Katsuki spins himself around, building up momentum for his Explosions. After spinning himself around and gathering momentum for his Explosions, Katsuki fires an Explosive tornado at his opponent.[3]

•     AP Shot (徹甲弾 (A・P・ショット) AP Shotto?): Katsuki's special move. Katsuki stretches out one of his hands and uses his other hand to form a circle on the palm of his outstretched hand. Katsuki then fires an explosion through the circle, which creates a concentrated blast beam. By focusing his the path of his explosions into a single point instead of around his whole palm, Katsuki creates a concentrated blast with reduced area of impact, but with enough power to successfully pierce even solid concrete.

•         AP Shot: Auto-Cannon: A rapid-fire version of his AP Shot technique. The explosion power is reduced in order to avoid dealing severe damage to human targets.[4]

Overall Abilities:

Katsuki has shown to be one of the strongest students on Class 1-A. He was able to defeat Fumikage Tokoyami and Shouto Todoroki during the Sports Festival, people who are also considered to be quite strong (although they had disadvantages respectively in their fights against Katsuki but despite these limitations they still proved to be strong). Many notable Pro Heroes such as Shouta Aizawa and All Might have praised Katsuki's prowess; even the League of Villains have taken notice of Katsuki's strength and went as far as kidnapping him even if it meant losing members of the Vanguard Action Squad.

Enhanced Strength: Katsuki possesses an above average physical strength, as he was able to fight on par with Izuku even when the latter is using his Quirk. He was also able to pressure and overpower Shouto Todoroki, a powerful combatant, during their battle.

Keen Intellect: Katsuki has proven to be very smart and strategic, as he was able to figure out Kurogiri's Quirk weakness and Fumikage's weakness in a short period of time. Additionally, he quickly assessed which of the attacking villains in USJ was the most dangerous threat in the long term. Even Pro Heroes (such as All Might) have mentioned several times his great potential and battle-sense. Shouta Aizawa stated that in battle Katsuki shines his brightest.


Equipment

Grenadier Bracers (籠手 Kote?): An adjustment added to Katsuki's hero costume that stores his nitroglycerin-like sweat. Once filled he can pull the grenade pin in order to release a large blast. As shown when he fought Izuku in All Might's Heroes vs. Villains test. It has enough explosive power to destroy all parts of the building within its blast radius. This equipment was first used during the Battle Trial.[5]

Improvised Grenades : Around the belt of his Hero costume, are several containers made to look like hand grenades. These can store Katsuki's nitroglycerin-like sweat, and be used as regular grenades at a later time. These were first used in a practical way during the Provisional license exam by Denki.

Knee Pads - These are very blunt metallic attachments to Katsuki's knees. They are designed so he can kill with his knees, but he has not displayed such use for them as of yet.
